Also visit the Palace, Kali Temple and Jai Mahal. An afternoon city tour of Jaipur will include The City Palace, Jai Singh’s Observatory and, if time permits, shopping in the Pink City. (B)
Jaipur, the vibrant capital of Rajasthan is popularly known as the ‘Pink City’ because of the pink-coloured buildings in its old city. It sits on a dry lakebed in a somewhat arid landscape surrounded by forts and palaces. The walled old city is in the northeast of Jaipur, the new parts spread to the south and west. Jaipur offers a combination of splendid sightseeing and shopping opportunities. If Jaipur is a dream city for those with an eye for history and romance, it is also a shopper’s paradise. The main tourist attractions are in the old city, and the principal shopping centre in the old city is Johari Bazaar, the jewellers’ market. The City owes its name, its foundation and its careful planning to the great warrior-astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh II. In 1728, he built the remarkable observatory, Jantar Mantar, which is still one of Jaipur’s main attractions.

Among Rajasthan’s many princely settlements, Jodhpur is one of the most distinctive. This five hundred year old settlement was the headquarters of the Rathore Rajputs celebrated for their tales of daring. This princely state is also referred to as “The Blue city”. One of the most beautiful Indian cities, the land of royalty is a glittering jewel set in the golden sands of barren desert landscape. The light that reflects off the golden sands engulfs a land renowned for its vibrant colours, people in bright clothes and beautiful jewellery, living in a city dominated by towering forts and palaces that rise from the sand like a mirage. Jodhpur is now a major export centre of handicrafts. Dominating the city of Jodhpur is Mehrangarh (meaning “Majestic Fort”), one of Rajasthan’s three great hilltop forts, originally built in 1806. Carved panels and porches, elaborately adorned walls and windows, seem to make the mediaeval splendour come alive. Mehrangarh appears impregnable, with its battlements soaring 400 feet above a hill.
Outside the fort, the small feudal town of Rohet seems to be straight out of the Arabian Nights with its primitive clay plastered huts and pigeon hole shops set up along dust trails. As evening descends upon the hotel, the darkness of the night is lit up by the flickering flames of fire around which the rhythmic movements of the folk dancers assumes shape in brilliant colours; truly an electrifying experience. A visit to Rohet Garh, (located 40 kms from Jodhpur), can also mean an introduction to the life-style of a typical Rajasthani village. Visitors can visit and witness the traditional ceremonies of Bishnoi and Brahmin villages.
Day 9 ROHETGARH
Take a jeep safari this morning into the desert and tribal areas and the picturesque Bishnoi villages to experience rustic Rajasthani life. Return for tea or coffee on the lawns, with the rest of the day to relax in your fort, or to wander in the village. Overnight at Rohetgarh. (B)
In the dusty desert region is located this spectacular hallmark of royalty blended with strength. Isolated, undiscovered and unspoilt, Rohetgarh reflects the true essence of an Indian village. Situated in the region of Marwar, the general environment of Rohetgarh expresses an enigma of valour, battle and chivalry.
Day 10 ROHETGARH-DEOGARH (250kms – 5 hrs)
On to Deogarh this morning to stay the night in another of the beautiful palaces of Rajasthan. (B)
Day 11 DEOGARH – DEVIGARH (110kms – 2½ hours)
On your way to Devigarh today, a stop will be made to visit the Ranakpur Jain temples.
The Ranakpur Temple, built in the 15th century, is the largest Jain temple in India There are 4 shrines, 24 pillared halls and 1444 columns, each richly decorated with elaborate sculptures and filigrees, including the domes. The creativity and beauty of those artistic works is unimaginable and the variety is such, that no two of the 1,444 columns are alike! The lavish abundance of marvellous stonemason works on white marble is quite overwhelming.
On to Delwara for a relaxing 3 night stay in one of the most luxurious Forts in India, and renowned for its Spa and Wellness Centre. (B)
Day 12 DEVIGARH
Free day in Devigarh. You may like to enjoy some special Ayurvedic treatments. (B)
Day 13 DEVIGARH-UDAIPUR-DEVIGARH (56 kms return)
Not very far away is Udaipur, the city of lakes, palaces, museums, temples, and gardens. The City Palace, a marvel of marble and granite overlooking Lake Pichola, is the largest palace in Rajasthan, its exquisite worksmanship making it a must on every visitor’s itinerary. A visit will also be made to the exquisite Crystal Gallery, with tea or coffee served in the interesting Durbar Hall. And to end your day in this magnificent city, enjoy a boat ride on Lake Pichola. (B)
Udaipur’s kaleidoscope of fairy-tale palaces, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow lanes strewn with stalls, carry the flavour of a heroic past, epitomising valour and chivalry. Their reflection in the placid waters of Lake Pichola is an enticing sight…. One of the most romantic cities in Rajasthan, Udaipur is also known as the city of lakes. The marble palaces, beautifully laid out gardens and the lakes make Udaipur seem almost like a mirage in the desert.
