Day 4 AGRA-JAIPUR VIA FATEHPUR SIKRI (270kms)
Travel by road to Jaipur, en route visiting Fatehpur Sikri – the deserted red sandstone city built by Emperor Akbar as his capital in the late 16th Century. On to the magnificent Pink City of Jaipur, where you will spend 3 nights. (B)
Jaipur, the vibrant capital of Rajasthan is popularly known as the ‘Pink City’ because of the pink-coloured buildings in its old city. It sits on a dry lake bed in a somewhat arid landscape surrounded by forts and palaces. The walled old city is in the north-east of Jaipur, the new parts spread to the south and west. Jaipur offers a combination of splendid sightseeing and shopping opportunities. If Jaipur is a dream city for those with an eye for history and romance, it is also a shopper’s paradise. The main tourist attractions are in the old city, and the principal shopping centre in the old city is Johari Bazaar, the jewellers’ market. The City owes its name, its foundation and its careful planning to the great warrior-astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh II. In 1728, he built the remarkable observatory, Jantar Mantar, which is still one of Jaipur’s main attractions.
Day 5 JAIPUR
Enjoy an elephant back or jeep ride*** up to the Amber Fort this morning, and also visit the Palace, Kali Temple and Jai Mahal. An afternoon city tour of Jaipur will include visiting The City Palace, Palace of Winds, Jai Singh’s Observatory and of course shopping in the Pink City. (B)

A huge fort with colourful bazaar and numerous havelis with elaborate architecture makes it an interesting destination for a brief sojourn.
Continue on to Mandawa and check in to your hotel. This afternoon, a walking tour will include the world-renowned havelis of Mandawa famous for their frescoes. These beautifully painted havelis were earlier on the abodes of several primary business families, but today it’s the caretakers present who will proudly explain the decorative dwellings to you. The must visit list of painted havelis includes the Goenka haveli, Chowkhani haveli, Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli, Lakshminarayan Ladia haveli, Mohahanlal saraf haveli etc. Overnight Mandawa. (B)
The semi desert region of Shekhawati is a colourful fantasy. Nowhere else in the world is there such a profusion of wall paintings, so intricate and finely executed, in hundreds of havelis, temples, cenotaphs, wells and forts, as in this region. The open air art gallery, as it is popularly called, is famous for its plethora of painted havelis, all commendable pieces of the rich artistic tradition of this region. Shekhawati’s magnificent havelis or mansions, built by rich merchants of the region, display a unique architecturalstyle that evolved around the courtyards to ensure safety and privacy of the women folk and protection from the heat of the long and harsh summers.Mandawa, founded in the 18th century, is a pleasant town with several excellent havelis, and a busy little market. The Fort above the town is now a hotel with a small museum and excellent paintings. There is a good view of the countryside from the fort.
Day 8 MANDAWA-BIKANER (270kms – 5½ hrs)
You will be driven to Bikaner today, with a free afternoon to relax and enjoy your surroundings. (B)
Bikaner – the royal fortified city with a timeless appeal. If ever beauty has bloomed in a desert, it has been at Bikaner. Founded in 1486, Bikaner is located in the north-west of Rajasthan, and the city is dotted with many sand dunes. Bikaner retains the mediaeval splendour that pervades the city’s lifestyle. The imposing palaces, beautiful and richly sculptured temples of red and yellow sand stones display some of the finest creations of Rajput civilization. Undulating lanes, colourful bazaars and bright and cheerful folks make Bikaner an interesting experience. Bikaner is situated directly on the ancient caravan routes that came from Africa and West Asia. It was therefore a great centre of trade in the ancient world. This gave rise to a curious phenomenon: the establishment of enormously wealthy Marwari families who are today leading industrialists and bankers.
Day 9 BIKANER
Sightseeing in Bikaner will include the imposing Junagarh Fort, built in 1589, and the beautiful 16th century Bhandeshwar and Sandeshwar Jain temples. Time will also be spent in the fascinating bazaars. (B)
Day 10 BIKANER-JAISALMER (294kms – 5½ hours)
A long drive through the Thar Desert will bring you to Jaisalmer where you will spend the next 2 nights. The approach to Jaisalmer across the arid Thar desert is truly magical as the city shimmers like a mirage. With the crenulated golden sandstone town walls and narrow streets lined with exquisitely carved buildings, it has an extraordinary mediaeval feel. Throbbing in the heart of the Thar desert, Jaisalmer is an intricately moulded wonderland. A captivating sandy outpost dubbed the Golden City because of honey colour imparted to its stone ramparts by the setting sun. Rest of the day free at leisure. Overnight in Jaisalmer. (B)
The name Jaisalmer evokes a vivid picture of sheer magic and brilliance of the desert. Local colour and warmth prevail over the inhospitable and forbidding terrain, imbuing the mediaeval town with a special magic. One of the main attractions is the imposing 12th century Jaisalmer Fort. The beautiful havelis which were built by wealthy merchants of Jaisalmer are yet another interesting aspect of the desert city. And, of course, the romantic sand dunes, the best way of exploring them and the desert around being by way of acamel safari.
Day 11 JAISALMER
Today will be a magical day, exploring Jaisalmer in the morning, including some of the exquisite intricately latticed havelis with their conspicuous façades that Jaisalmer is so famous for. One of them, Patwan-Ki-Haveli, (pictured left), is one of the largest and most elaborate havelis in Jaisalmer. It is five storeys high and extensively carved. Other havelis will be visited, as well as Jaisal Fort, that seems to rise out of a desert haze, its yellow sandstone walls and bastions taking on a golden hue in the afternoon sun, which is why it is aptly called Sonar Kila or the Golden Fort. Then late afternoon you will be driven to Sam to enjoy a camel ride in the sand dunes. Overnight at Jaisalmer. (B)
Day 12 JAISALMER-JODHPUR (295kms – 6hrs)
After breakfast, a fairly long drive to Jodhpur, with lunch on the way at the attractive Manvar Resort (own expense). Overnight Jodhpur. (B)
Among Rajasthan’s many princely settlements, Jodhpur is one of the most distinctive. This five hundred year old settlement was the headquarters of the Rathore Rajputs celebrated for their tales of daring. This princely state is also referred to as “The Blue city”. One of the most beautiful Indian cities, the land of royalty is a glittering jewel set in the golden sands of barren desert landscape. The light that reflects off the golden sands engulfs a land renowned for its vibrant colours, people in bright clothes and beautiful jewellery, living in a city dominated by towering forts and palaces that rise from the sand like a mirage. Jodhpur is now a major export centre of handicrafts.
Day 13 JODHPUR
You will be taken on a half day city tour of Jodhpur in the morning, visiting the Jaswant Thada – a white marble cenotaph, built in 1899 in memory of the Maharadja Jaswant Singh, Mehrangarh Fort, and the Royal Palace. Free afternoon. Overnight Jodhpur. (B)
Dominating the city of Jodhpur is Mehrangarh (meaning “Majestic Fort”), one of Rajasthan’s three great hilltop forts, originally built in 1806. Carved panels and porches, elaborately adorned walls and windows, seem to make the mediaeval splendour come alive. Mehrangarh appears impregnable, with its battlements soaring 400 feet above a hill.
Day 14 JODHPUR-UDAIPUR (295kms – 6hrs)
Today will be an interesting day. On your way to Udaipur, visits will be made to the Ranakpur Jain temples, Continue on to Udaipur to overnight. (B)
The Ranakpur Jain Temple was built under the reign of monarch Rana Kumbha in the 15th century and is – with a 4,500 square yard base – the largest Jain temple in India. Entering the temple you may be overwhelmed by the the lavish abundance of marvellous stonemason works on white marble. There are four subsidiary shrines, 24 pillared halls and all in all 1444 columns each from one piece and all richly decorated with the most elaborate sculptures and filigrees, including the domes. The creativity and beauty of these artistic works is unimaginable and the variety is such, that no two of the 1444 columns are alike!
Day 15 UDAIPUR
A free morning in this beautiful city for shopping or further sightseeing, or to just relax at your hotel.
This afternoon you will be taken on a half day city tour of Udaipur. The City Palace, a marvel of marble and granite overlooking Lake Pichola, is the largest palace in Rajasthan, its exquisite worksmanship making it a must on every visitor’s itinerary. A visit will also be made to the exquisite Crystal Gallery, with tea or coffee at the interesting Durbar Hall. Overnight Udaipur. (B)
Udaipur’s kaleidoscope of fairy-tale palaces, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow lanes strewn with stalls, carry the flavour of an heroic past, epitomising valour and chivalry. Their reflection in the placid waters of Lake Pichola is an enticing sight…. One of the most romantic cities in Rajasthan, Udaipur is also known as the city of lakes. The marble palaces, beautifully laid out gardens and the lakes make Udaipur seem almost like a mirage in the desert.
